KINGSTON, Jamaica - All 2,500 employees of national airline Air Jamaica will lose their jobs on April 12 because the company will not exist, according to the government-owned company's chief executive officer. The carrier will be purchased by Trinidad and Tobago's Caribbean Airlines, which will cease Air Jamaica's operations. "The plan is that all employee positions at Air Jamaica Holdings Ltd. will be made redundant effective with the transaction date," wrote Bruce Noble, CEO of Air Jamaica, in a memo to employees. Noble said that the Jamaican government "is not in a position to continue providing financial support for Air Jamaica going forward, and if the transaction with Caribbean Airlines cannot be satisfactorily completed in short order, the options for the government and for Air Jamaica become very limited." The transaction would make Caribbean Airlines the region's biggest carrier.
