Brazil’s World Cup preparations continue

Planes, stadiums and automobiles are on FIFA's mind.

From airports to venue construction and renovations to infrastructure improvements in a dozen cities that will host the World Cup in Brazil, FIFA - soccer's governing body - has made it clear it remains skeptical about the country's preparations to host the 2014 World Cup.

Brazil Sports Minister Orlando Silva met with FIFA secretary general Jerome Vackle to help assure the organization that preparations were on schedule.

Silva said he provided Vackle with a copy of the nation's master plan showing how private investors were helping to fund completion of the upgrades.

"[He was] extremely satisfied with what we presented," Silva said, according to The Associated Press. "He leaves Brazil confident that the path taken to prepare for the World Cup is the correct path."

Silva said any claims that Brazil won't be ready to host the world's biggest soccer tournament are unfounded.

"These are the opinions of those who ignore the reality of the country," said Silva, according to The Associated Press. "[FIFA will] see the reality close up. They will be surprised with the preparations for the World Cup."

Silva said Brazil needs FIFA's help to be successful.

"FIFA will have to do its part," he added. "Projects for the stadiums were approved only this [past year], and you could not start work on the stadiums without the projects' having been approved."
