Dominican Republic: United Nations to scrutinize free school breakfasts

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - International health officials are again providing free breakfasts for poor students after the meals were suspended for three months because more than 135 children at three schools became sick for unknown reasons. "We are going to do a thorough analysis of the foods and will create a permanent system of vigilance," said Anselmo Aburto, a nutrition consultant for the Pan American Health Organization. He added the children are being served subsidized milk, juice, bread and plantain puree. The health concern started in February, when 40 students became sick at a school in the northern part of the country. A month later, 42 fell ill at a school in the northwestern part of the country. In April, 56 students at another school in the northern part of the country became sick. Government officials initially thought the milk was causing the illnesses, but tests revealed it was clean.
