Dignitaries from the 35 member nations gather to discuss how to make region safer.
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - Delegations from 35 member nations of the Organization of American States (OAS) have started arriving in the nation's capital to attend the 41st General Assembly that will run from June 5 to 7.
The General Assembly, a meeting attended by foreign ministers and dignitaries from the member nations, will focus on the theme "Citizen Security in the Americas." The theme was proposed by the host country to the OAS Permanent Council, the organization's governing body.
"[Insecurity] is a problem that not only hurts [the] health, physical integrity and lives of millions of inhabitants in the Americas but also destroys individual freedoms and basic rights. It also directly affects the fundamentals of economic development and threatens the integrity of the state and the democratic institutions of many countries in the region," OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza said in a statement.
"[Citizen Security in the Americas] is an issue that causes great concern for all citizens of the country," Salvadoran Foreign Minister Hugo Martínez said. "We are looking for solutions to the lack of personal security in the hemisphere. Organized crime knows no boundaries nor respects codes and laws. It mutates rapidly, and it needs to be fought in a frontal way."
Martínez added: "The Salvadoran government has advocated a regional and hemispheric focus [on security] for all countries to be ready to act in coordination, so criminals have less space to maneuver and are prosecuted to the full extent of the law wherever they go."
El Salvador's hosting of the meeting is a big step toward its recognition as a viable host of international events, said Douglas Avilés, who represents the Democratic Change party in the Salvadoran Congress.
"This is an interesting opportunity to foster the image of our country and to attract new investments," he said. "Now more than ever, the country needs to show itself to Latin America as a nation that has consolidated its democracy and guaranteed stability in its government institutions... it's a country that wants to move forward, increase foreign investment and seek new partners and allies."
Avilés said it's imperative countries develop a strategy to work together to fight narco-trafficking, since the prevalence of drugs throughout the region has made the streets much more dangerous for everybody.
"We need to adopt a regional strategy that allows [the countries in the region] to be more efficient in combating narcotics trafficking," he said.
Conferees are expected to discuss a strategy in which all OAS-member countries work together to fight organized crime, kidnapping, and human, weapons and narcotics trafficking throughout the hemisphere, according to the General Assembly's General Assembly's website.
"The most important test for world leaders in the 21st Century is to see if they can work together to face the challenges in security," OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Randim said in a statement.
But the 41st General Assembly was preceded with events geared toward promoting youth entrepreneurship and the private sector throughout the Americas.
The VII OAS Private Sector Forum featured several business leaders from the Americas who gave their input on how to improve citizens' safety in the Americas.
The forum, held June 2-3 in San Salvador, centered on the theme "Competitiveness and Security for Development."
Speakers included: Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes; Michelle Bachelet, former Chilean president and United Nations' Under-Secretary-General for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women; Henry Kronfle, president of the Latin American Industries Association; and José Augusto P. da Silva, president of Brazilian pipeline company Pipeway Brasil.
The Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas, a competition of businesses and products among young Latin American entrepreneurs, also started on June 2. Businesspersons between the ages of 13 and 36 are competing for prize money to develop their products, internships and work spaces.
