Venezuela: Newspaper criticized for running morgue photo

CARACAS, Venezuela - The daily newspaper El Nacional, may be investigated for publishing a photo of bodies piled up at a morgue in the nation's capital. Police and the Ombudsman's Office have criticized the newspaper and requested authorities to launch an investigation. Wilmer Flores, the head of the CICPC scientific and investigative police force, said on Aug. 13 he will request the Attorney General's Office to being an inquiry against the privately owned publication for putting the photo of corpses on its front page. Flores said the picture was shot in "2006 and not at present." "We are contacting the Attorney General's Office in writing to take action against that newspaper," Flores said on TV channel VTV from the Bello Monte Morgue in southeastern Caracas. Flores said the photo is illegal because it violates laws set to protect children and teenagers because the image can spread "fear" among them, Flores said on VTV. Miguel Henrique Otero, El Nacional's editor, said the photograph depicts "what a terrible thing crime is in Venezuela." He also said the photo was taken "last December" and "the date [stamped on the picture by] the Canon camera [states] it is Dec. 26, 2009."
