Uruguay has created Free Trade Zones in a number of different places within its territory.

Presently free trade zones have been established in Colonia, Florida, Nueva Helvecia, Nueva Palmira, Rio Negro, Rivera, San José and Montevideo. Some of these areas are in private ownership, others are owned by the government. In certain cases, ownership rests with the government but all operations are run by private enterprise.

Free Trade Zone Colonia

Free Trade Zone Colonia is a modern international site of 22 hectares with 130,000 m2 of constructions, with internal roads 22 meters wide, with parking areas, in which large commercial and industrial activity takes place.

It has industries, logistic and business developments which have been dynamically and strongly promoting economic projects for the region. Its infrastructure is designed to fully satisfy the requirements of international companies with the highest standards.

The main advantages the free zone offers are:

  • Total exemption of national taxes (net worth, income, VAT, etc.) on operations done by user entities.
  • Total exoneration of import-export taxes on the entrance and exit of merchandise to and from the free zone.
  • The advantages mentioned simplify administrative aspects since they do not have to register as importer or exporter, not having to do previous deposits of taxes, etc.
  • State monopolies do not apply.
  • Promotional costs of certain services (energy, water, ports, etc.)
