What Is The Zona Libre De Colon/Colon Free Zone?

by Joshua Adekane

The Colon Free Zone's success is due to a combination of factors such as its geographical location in the Republic of Panama (Central America), the Panama Canal, the use of the US dollar as legal tender, a large banking center, a very developed insurance industry, state-of-the-art container ports and not very demanding business requirements.

The Republic of Panama has a geographic advantage as it is located at the crossroads of the world thanks to the Panama Canal. It also enjoys economic stability as it uses the US dollar as legal tender which fluctuates less than other currencies in the region. A large and developed banking center and insurance industry, modern container ports and not very strict business requirements also play an important role in the success of this zone.

The Zona Libre Colon benefits greatly from its proximity to the Panama Canal. Every year over 12,700 cargo vessels cross the Panama Canal.
