Montevideo, founded by the Spanish in 1726 as a military stronghold, soon took advantage of its natural harbor to become an important commercial center. Uruguay Economic Data: an export-orientated sector based on agriculture and technology
Uruguay's economy is defined by the export-orientated sector that is based on agriculture. They have a well-educated work force and there are very high levels of social spending. Even though they had financial difficulties from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, the growth for the economy in Uruguay actually averaged 8% annually and is still growing today. Even with the rates dipping slightly, Uruguay has been able to avoid a recession and to keep moving forward at a positive growth rate, this has been higher than at the public expenditure and investment levels.
