Panama Business Etiquette
Dress Code
- Conservative business suits are appropriate for men.
- Panamanian businessmen in higher positions wear suits; others wear a lightweight shirt that is not tucked inside the trousers
- Women should wear a dress or skirt and blouse. Women should avoid wearing any kind of revealing clothing
Conversation
- Handshaking is standard
- Friends embrace
- Good conversation topics: family, hobbies, basketball, baseball
Meetings
- Appointments should be made in advance.
- Normal office hours are 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
- Punctuality is regarded as important in Panamanian business, so you should arrive on time for your meeting.
- Have business cards and other material printed in Spanish as well as English
- Titles are important and should be included on business cards.
- Mr. = Senor
- Mrs. = Senora
- Miss = Senorita
- Business negotiations can be quite lengthy, and several visits to Panama may be needed before agreement is reached.
Business Entertainment
- When dining, the host usually sits at one end of the table with the guest of honor at the other end
- Foreign businesswomen should always include spouses in invitations to business dinners
Tipping:
- Porters receive 0.50 cents per suitcase and in general 10% over consumption in fancier restaurants. In small cafes and more casual places, tipping is not necessary, although, appreciated
