Panama Business Etiquette

Dress Code

  • Conservative business suits are appropriate for men.
  • Panamanian businessmen in higher positions wear suits; others wear a lightweight shirt that is not tucked inside the trousers
  • Women should wear a dress or skirt and blouse. Women should avoid wearing any kind of revealing clothing

Conversation

  • Handshaking is standard
  • Friends embrace
  • Good conversation topics: family, hobbies, basketball, baseball

Meetings

  • Appointments should be made in advance.
  • Normal office hours are 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
  • Punctuality is regarded as important in Panamanian business, so you should arrive on time for your meeting.
  • Have business cards and other material printed in Spanish as well as English
  • Titles are important and should be included on business cards.
    • Mr. = Senor
    • Mrs. = Senora
    • Miss = Senorita
  • Business negotiations can be quite lengthy, and several visits to Panama may be needed before agreement is reached.

Business Entertainment

  • When dining, the host usually sits at one end of the table with the guest of honor at the other end
  • Foreign businesswomen should always include spouses in invitations to business dinners

Tipping:

  • Porters receive 0.50 cents per suitcase and in general 10% over consumption in fancier restaurants. In small cafes and more casual places, tipping is not necessary, although, appreciated
