Types of Measurement and Analysis

Measurement and analysisThere are different types of measurement and analysis for different industries and purposes. These also vary in accuracy, and are used for measuring many different things. Some of the common ones include counters, analyzers, electronic measuring instruments, testing equipment and optical instruments among others. All these and more will be highlighted here.

Analyzers

An analyzer is a piece of equipment or a person that is responsible for analyzing data. Some of the tasks involved include finding relationships and patterns between parts of the data as well as a detailed analysis of the structure of the data.

Analyzers may come in the form of software or hardware. There are different types of analyzers.

These include logic analyzer, bus analyzer, automated analyzer, protocol analyzer, network analyzer and vector signal analyzer among others.

Some of the things that can be analyzed using this equipment include solid, gas or liquids.

Counters

Counters are mostly used in computing and digital logic. Counters mostly count and record the number of times a process or event has occurred. This is usually in relation to a clock signals.

Counters are also heavily used in electronics. One example of such a counter is the Asynchronous counter, where the clocks used are in the form of changing state bits. Other kinds of counters include ring counters, cascaded counters, decade counters and synchronous counters.

There are many different applications for counters. Most are digital, and the counting is done in the form of natural binary. There are also different types of circuits used in counters including digital building blocks.

There are also different sequences used for counters including natural binary sequence and counting sequence.

Electrical Instruments

There are different kinds of electrical instruments in use today. Most of these contain a power switch as well as enclosures and different electrical components.

Some of the common electrical instruments include small appliances, power tools, major appliances and microcontrollers among others.

Electronic Measuring Instruments

There are different kinds of electronic measuring instruments. Some of these include voltage measuring instruments, scanner and analyzers as well as oscilloscopes.

Frequency measuring instruments can be used to measure analog frequency or digital pulse among other things. Voltage measuring instruments on the other hand include digital multimeter, digital voltage meter and used for measuring direct current. Waveform, spectrum and scanners analyzers are other kinds of electronic measuring instruments.

Level Measuring Instruments

There are also many different level measuring instruments that have different applications today. Some of these are used for measuring liquids. The common measuring instruments for liquids include radiometric, hydrostatic pressure, guided radar and ultrasonic among others.

There are also instruments that are used for measuring continuous solids. Some of these include ultrasonic, flow indicator and ultrasonic.

There are also level measuring instrument for point level liquids. These include conductive, radiometric, capacitance and control units among others.

Measuring and Gauging Tools

The measuring and gauging tools used depend on the particular application. Although measuring tools are considered to be more versatile, gauging tools tend to be more accurate. In applications where high precision is not needed, measuring tools are often used in place of gauging tools since they are more versatile.

Gauging tools are also faster to use, and provide for more accuracy as compared to measuring tools. There is little difference between measuring and gauging today especially because of the electronic gauges that are widely used today. This means that modern measuring and gauging tools generally serve the same purpose.

Optical Instruments

Optical instruments vary in their designs and applications. Some of the common optical instrument includes alignment telescopes, autocollimators and camera test patterns. These are used in such industries as aerospace, semiconductor the military among other sectors. Most optical instruments are highly specialized. Other fields include astronomy, photography and fiber optics.

One of the most commonly used optical instruments is the autocollimator. This is used to measure angles with high precision. These are used particularly for angular monitoring, angular movement and angle standards verification.

The interferometer is another optical instrument that is used for many different applications. This is used in fiber optics, optics, particle physics and plasma physics among other areas. This is a simple optical instrument, which means that it does not need one to be a specialist to be able to use it.

Yet another one of the optical instruments is the alignment telescope. Some of the components include reticles, optical micrometer, objective lens and eyepiece. These are usually small, and have various applications.

Physical Measuring Instruments

Physical measuring instruments are reliable, and are used for many different purposes. There are some things however that one needs to keep in mind to ensure accuracy. One of these things is to check to ensure that the measuring instrument meets the set accuracy requirements or standards. Additionally, it is also important to ensure that the quality assurance requirements are met by the measurement protocol of the physical measuring instruments.

Physical measuring instruments are used to measure such things as blood pressure, height lung volume and exercise capacity among other things. It is very important to look out for incorrect measuring procedure to ensure that the results are accurate.

When dealing with physical measuring instruments, it is important to first determine the level of precision required. The next step is to choose instruments that are in line with the desired level of precision.

Pressure Measuring Instruments

One of the major components of pressure measuring instruments is shut off valves. Others include a pulsation dampener and a pipe coil among other things.

There are many different pressure measuring instruments on the market today, and are used for a variety of applications. As the name would suggest, pressure measuring instruments are used for measuring pressure. It is important to first decide the application for the instrument before going out to purchase the appropriate measuring instrument.

Temperature Instruments

There are different kinds of temperature instruments. One of these is the thermometer, which is the most commonly used instrument for measuring pressure. Thermocouples and calorimeters are also widely used temperature instruments, and have a number of different uses.

Calorimeter for example is almost exclusively used in laboratories. This is generally used to measure the temperature of tiny particles, and understand their inner workings. These are highly specialized temperature instruments, and are rarely used outside the laboratory setting.

Thermometers on the other hand are more versatile, and have practical day-to-day applications. They can be used indoors and outdoors, as well as for the human body or various solids or liquids.

Thermocouples are generally used for measuring heat for cooked meats, and are applied for cooking meats to ensure that meat is not undercooked.

Testing Equipments

The most commonly used testing equipment used today is the Automatic Test Equipment (ATE).

The testing equipment is automated, and is used to test and evaluate the results.

Automatic test equipment can be controlled using a computerized digital multimeter. The most common application for testing equipment is in the electronic manufacturing industry, where it is used especially for testing electronic systems and components especially after fabrication. This is also used in avionics and automobiles, as well as in wireless communication and military applications.

Some of the items that can be tested include resistors, inductors, capacitors as well as electronic systems and devices. Additionally, integrated circuits and complex electronic systems can also be tested using this equipment.

Before certain products hit the consumer market, they have to be tested using testing equipment to ensure that they are in good working order.

Timers

Timers can be used to perform repeated tasks, or be used to perform tasks once (after a delay). Timers are used in virtually all industries. They also have day to day applications including in sports.

Depending on the task at hand, the timer might be simple, or have complex operations especially in an industrial setting.

Weighting Scales

There are a number of different types of weighting scales. These are used for industrial applications such as pharmaceutical, food and transportation, chemical and shipping among other industries. There are a wide range of measurements where weighting scales are concerned.

Bench scales for example are a kind of industrial weighting scales. It is mostly used in markets and restaurants, and has a platform where the items to be weighed can be placed.

In addition to this, there the analytic balances. These are used to measure various substances in labs. Such things as chemicals are weighed using the analytic weighting scales, and these are particularly designed for the maximum possible accuracy.

Medical institutions use the medical beam balance, moisture balances and baby weighing as the preferred weighing scales.
